July is Cape Town’s wettest month, and if you’re spending a week or more in Blouberg, you will get at least one day where surfing and beach walks aren’t really on the table.
This is the guide for that day. Not a generic “top 10 things to do in Cape Town” list, but the actual spots and moves we send guests to when the rain sets in and the ocean is being ocean.
We’ve been running the lodge through enough winters to know exactly which places are worth the drive in the rain and which ones are only good on a sunny day.
What’s the Best Thing to Do in Blouberg on a Rainy Day?
Head into the city for a proper museum or gallery afternoon. Cape Town has serious indoor culture on tap: the Zeitz MOCAA for contemporary African art, the District Six Museum for real local history, or the Iziko South African Museum if you want something more classic. All three easily fill three or four hours and are a genuinely good use of a grey day, not just a backup plan.
Do a proper wine tasting inland. Constantia or the Cape Winelands are less than an hour away, and rainy days are actually the best time to go since the tasting rooms are quieter and you’re not tempted to spend the whole visit outside anyway.
Get a long lunch somewhere with a view, rain or not. Places like the V&A Waterfront have indoor seating with harbour views, and a slow two-hour lunch feels a lot more decadent when you can hear rain on the roof instead of feeling guilty about being inside.
Are There Good Cafes or Coworking Spots Near Blouberg for a Rainy Day?
Yes, Blouberg has a solid handful of cafes built for exactly this kind of day. Look for spots with proper seating and strong coffee, not just a counter and two stools. A slow morning with a laptop and a flat white is a completely legitimate way to spend a rainy Tuesday, and several local cafes are set up for exactly that.
Our own co-working space at the lodge is the easiest option if you don’t want to go anywhere at all. Good wifi, hot coffee, and a couch that’s better than most cafe seating, especially when the alternative is walking somewhere in the rain.
What If I Still Want to Be Near the Ocean?
Drive out to Cape Point or Boulders Beach anyway. Rain over Blouberg doesn’t always mean rain everywhere, and both spots are dramatic in bad weather in a way they’re not on a postcard-perfect day. Boulders Beach penguins in the rain are, honestly, still doing their thing regardless of the sky.
Or just watch the storm from somewhere dry. A big front rolling in off the Atlantic is a proper show, and there’s something genuinely lekker about watching it from a warm spot with a hot drink instead of being out in it.
Is It Worth Booking Activities on a Day the Forecast Looks Bad?
Yes, most indoor and inland activities aren’t weather-dependent at all, so a bad surf forecast doesn’t need to mean a wasted day. Museums, wineries, and long lunches run exactly the same whether it’s sunny or pouring, which makes rainy days a good time to tick off the plans that don’t need good weather anyway.
Save the beach days for when the forecast actually clears, and use the rain as permission to do the things you might otherwise skip in favour of another surf session.
